DR. HANSEN IS ACTIVE IN POLITICS
On Monday October 3rd Dr. Hansen and Dr. Bill Bero, representing the Wisconsin Dental Association attended a fund raiser in support of Senator Ron Johnson. At the event Dr. Hansen discussed the impact of the Affordable Care Act on access to dental care in Wisconsin.
Dear Valued Patients, Friends and Family,
We are excited to share with you that Two Rivers Family Dental has joined forces with The Oral Cancer Foundation in an effort to raise public awareness and funds for oral cancer research. Our staff will participate in The 2nd Annual Oral Cancer Foundation 5K Walk/Run for Awareness that will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Waukesha County Technological College!
Did you know that the fastest growing segment of the oral cancer community is young, healthy non-smokers? It’s shocking but true. Exposure to the HPV-16 virus, the most common sexually transmitted infection, and the same one responsible for causing cervical cancer in women, is now the leading cause of oral cancers in the U.S.
Over 43,000 Americans will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer this year. When found early, oral cancers have an 80% survival rate. Unfortunately, the majorities are found as late stage cancers and this accounts for the very high death rate of about 45% at five years from diagnosis. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way, and it starts with public awareness and early detection.
We’ve set a fund raising goal of $2500.00. So we need your help. OCF uses its donations in varied ways; funding research, creating public awareness and distributing information about the disease, pressing for more professional involvement in early detection, and providing patient support through the most highly trafficked disease message boards in the world, to name a few.
No contribution is too small. Your donation makes it possible to continue the work to decrease the number of newly diagnosed patients and supporting those that it does affect. Together, we can make a difference. It takes teamwork to make the dream work! Donations can be made in support of our Two Rivers Family Dental Team participating in the walk here at our office, online through this link or click here just print this donation form and mail.
If you would like to learn more about The Oral Cancer Foundation, please visit their website at www.oralcancer.org. Thank you. Your generosity saves lives!

Working with Mary Jo on the floor in the restorative section of the MOM mobile clinic. Like most of the volunteers in this area we spent most of our time over the 2 days treating patients providing fillings, extractions and root canals. Patients we saw here had not seen a dentist in years and were in great need and very appreciative of the services we could offer.
Dr Hansen is with dental school classmate Green Bay periodontal specialist Dr Paula Crum. Dr Crum worked in the diagnosis department and Dr Hansen was seeing patients in the restorative section of the clinic.
Great time to reconnect with my former dental assistant from Appleton, Mary Jo Dempsey. I really enjoyed the opportunity to to work with her again!
Two Rivers Family Dental 2nd Annual Oral Cancer Screening Event Was A Great Success
Two Rivers Family Dental free oral cancer screening event was a great success. Community members filled our entire afternoon. Two Rivers Family Dental will continue to partner with the Oral Cancer Foundation and persevere to raise awareness that early detection is the key to fight this deadly disease. We would like to thank Side Effect Support LLC for providing us with the opportunity to incorporate the OralID Fluorescense Technology into our screening event. OralID uses a proven, optically based technology called "fluorescence technology." OralID's fluorescence technology uses a blue light (435-460 nm) that allows a clinician to identify oral cancer, pre-cancer and other abnormal lesions at an earlier stage, thus saving lives. The medical applications of fluorescence technology includes diagnosis of the GI tract, cervix, lung, skin and oral mucosa.
The office of Two Rivers Family Dental-Chris J. Hansen, DDS has partnered with The Oral Cancer Foundation in honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month and will be offering free oral cancer screenings on Thursday, April 14th 1pm-4pm to the public. Oral cancer has existed outside the understanding of much of the public, yet 48,250 Americans will be newly diagnosed this year alone. We
would like to invite the community to our office for a free oral cancer screening in an effort to raise awareness for this silent killer. For more information about our event and a map of our location go to the Oral Cancer Foundation Events webpage: http://www.oralcancer-screening.org/events/index.php?eID=29375
We can be your dental home.
Dr. Chris Hansen has been a practicing dentist in the Lakeshore area for more than 25 years, and in starting his own practice, modestly says, “Our homey, small office environment allows us to deliver personalized care for patients of all ages. We listen to your concerns and goals for your dental health and address them with a full range of options.” Yet, there is nothing small about the range of services offered and the extent to which they deliver them. Two Rivers Family dental offers therapies to treat jaw pain and headaches, appliances to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, sedation dentistry, and single visit crown restorations.
New patients can expect to have a full hour with the doctor, including a private consultation to discuss concerns, followed by a clinical exam, a thorough evaluation of the face, head and neck, soft tissues of the mouth, tooth-by-tooth exam including an intra-oral camera guided tour of the mouth, and detailed gum evaluation, followed by a written report.
On January 1st, 2016 Two Rivers Family Dental merged with the office of
Dr. David Loritz, who retired from dental practice. Our combined offices share a mission to provide personalized gentle care in a small office environment. Our priority is to deliver the finest dental care one patient at a time.

Sipping, Snacking and Tooth Decay
Many parents across the country will issue a common refrain at dinnertime tonight: ?You'd better eat that--it's good for you!? There's another old favorite in the parental arsenal of dietary admonitions: ?Don't eat that-it'll rot your teeth!? Now more than ever, kids are faced with a bewildering array of food choices -- from fresh produce to sugar-laden processed convenience meals and snack foods. What children eat and when they eat it may affect not only their general health but also their oral health.
Americans are consuming foods and drinks high in sugar and starches more often and in larger portions than ever before. It's clear that ?junk? foods and drinks gradually have replaced nutritious beverages and foods for many people. For example, the average teenage boy in the U.S. consumes 81 gallons of soft drinks each year! Alarmingly, a steady diet of sugary foods and drinks can ruin teeth, especially among those who snack throughout the day. Common activities may contribute to the tendency toward tooth decay. These include ?grazing? habitually on foods with minimal nutritional value, and frequently sipping on sugary drinks.
When sugar is consumed over and over again in large, often hidden amounts, the harmful effect on teeth can be dramatic. Sugar on teeth provides food for bacteria, which produce acid. The acid in turn can eat away the enamel on teeth.
Almost all foods have some type of sugar that cannot and should not be eliminated from our diets. Many of these foods contain important nutrients and add enjoyment to eating. But there is a risk for tooth decay from a diet high in sugars and starches. Starches can be found in everything from bread to pretzels to salad dressing, so read labels and plan carefully for a balanced, nutritious diet for you and your kids.
Reduce your children's risk of tooth decay:
- Sugary foods and drinks should be consumed with meals. Saliva production increases during meals and helps neutralize acid production and rinse food particles from the mouth.
- Limit between-meal snacks. If kids crave a snack, offer them nutritious foods.
- If your kids chew gum, make it sugarless - Chewing sugarless gum after eating can increase saliva flow and help wash out food and decay-producing acid.
- Monitor beverage consumption - Instead of soft drinks all day, children should also choose water and low-fat milk.
- Help your children develop good brushing and flossing habits.
- Schedule regular dental visits.
